That’s what I’m here for. I did the hours of research so you don’t have to. 🔎

In this article, we dive into rates by experience, industry, and location—plus what people charge on freelance platforms and what folks on Reddit actually report.

Don’t stress, you’ll walk away informed.

Ready? Let’s roll.

Average hourly rate for freelance consultants worldwide

What’s the average rate for freelance consultants around the world?

Buckle up, I’ve got solid data for you. 💪🏻

I dug deep into Freelancermap’s Freelancer Study 2025.

In their global survey with 3,571 independent pros from 73 countries (Most participants are from Europe), the “Consulting | Management” field reported an average hourly rate of €120. For comparison, the overall average across all freelance professions sits at €100/hr.

Yep, as you might guess, that’s higher than what we’ll see later from Upwork data.

Also interesting: 67% of respondents are happy with their rates, while 33% aren’t thrilled.

What about other sources?

ZipRecruiter reports freelance consultants make an average of $48/hr, while Payscale shows $30.52/hr.

Big gaps, right?

Here’s the thing: context matters.

The Freelancermap survey pulls from 73 countries and focuses on higher-paying sectors like “Management.” Meanwhile, sources like Payscale and ZipRecruiter average across lower-paid industries too, which explains the differences.

Average consultant rates by experience

  • Beginners (0–2 years): If you’re just starting out, expect to charge around $15–$30/hr.
  • Mid-level (3–5 years): With some experience, your rates can jump to $30–$75/hr.
  • Senior consultants (5+ years): At this level, rates get serious—$75–$150+, depending on your niche.

I also checked out some Reddit threads to see what people are saying about consulting rates.

Most freelancers agree: selling yourself short is a mistake. For example, someone with 8 years of marketing experience just starting consulting was recommended rates like $100 for 30 mins, $150–$200/hr, or $1,500/day. Basically, double their current rates.

Many also argue you shouldn’t work for less than $50/hr. (You can check the discussion here.)

Starting low is normal in most professions. But in some niches, like Organizational Development Consulting, you can start with way higher rates.

Alright, I get it, you’re unsure what to charge.

That’s when you need a personalized rate average.

Consultant rates on Upwork vary by industry

Your rates really depend on the sector you consult in and sometimes the differences are crazy. For example, as an IT consultant, you might start at $12/hr, but if you’re in organizational development… you could start at $80/hr. Yep, that gap is wild. 😳

Here’s what consultants in different niches earn on Upwork on average:

  • Business Consultants: $28–$98/hr
  • HR Consultants: $29–$75/hr
  • Organizational Development Consultants: $80–$120/hr
  • Marketing Consultants: $20–$60/hr
  • IT Consultants: $12–$30/hr
  • Startup Consultants: $51–$108/hr

Also, Upwork takes a 10–15% cut from freelancers’ earnings. On the flip side, if you have your own clients and invoice directly, you usually keep way more of your fees.

That’s exactly what we want for Ruul freelancers. More money in your pocket. That’s why we charge a flat 5% commission, no matter the project size.

Take a look at the fees. 👀(Hint: there is nothing hidden)

Checking out the top consultants on Upwork

“Consultant” is such a broad label; it branches out everywhere.

Even saying “Marketing Consultant” isn’t enough. You could narrow it to “Etsy Marketing Consultant,” or even “Etsy Digital Product Marketing Consultant.”

Going niche is great, it sets you apart. But don’t get so specific that no clients can find you.

I analyzed top consultants in different niches on Upwork and their rates. 👇🏻

  1. Accounting & Tax Consulting, Stacy H. – $75/hr

25+ years of experience, QuickBooks ProAdvisor certified, provides US tax strategies and full-service accounting.

  1. Legal & Contract Consulting, Cope T. – $200/hr

24+ years of experience, specializes in tech & commercial contracts, consults on large-scale contracts for global companies.

  1. Etsy Optimization & E-commerce, Cierra S. – $65/hr

6+ years of experience, optimized 200+ Etsy shops, uses custom methods to boost sales and revenue.

  1. Financial & Data Analysis, Edward R G. – $135/hr

14 years as finance manager, delivers P&L models, reporting, and data analysis for Fortune 500s and startups.

  1. Pitch Deck & Startup Consulting, Sivasubramanian B. – $49/hr

7+ years of experience, prepared 300+ investor pitches, supports startups strategically and visually for fundraising.

  1. Business Strategy & Financial Planning, Ian D. – $200/hr

20 years of experience, managed $100M+ budgets, provides strategy, business plans, and valuation for global companies & entrepreneurs.

  1. Process Automation & Workflow Consulting, Ben K. – $130/hr

10+ years of experience, boosts operational efficiency for SMBs with process automation, digital ecosystem design, and AI integration.

Some sectors really justify high rates. Finance and legal? $200/hr is standard. Cope T., with 24 years of experience creating global tech contracts, more than earns it.

E-commerce and Etsy optimization are different. Cierra S. transforms shops and drives real revenue, so $65/hr is fair.

For process automation & planning, consultants like Ben K. save businesses time and money with AI and workflow integration. $130/hr reflects that value perfectly.

These examples show which niches are in demand and why rates vary.

So… feeling a bit clearer now?

Freelance consulting rates around the world

Here’s a twist: your country doesn’t set your rates. Sounds weird, right?

It’s not your country, it’s your client’s country that matters.

This is where the game starts.

By the end of this section, you’ll see exactly what I mean.

Multiple sources show Switzerland topping the charts for freelance consultant rates, and we see this trend across many freelance professions.

High rates in places like Switzerland? Totally fair. Living costs are high, so higher pay is justified.

Check out this table 👇🏻

Source: Metrics’ 2025 IT Consulting Report

  • Skill 1 (Testing & Field Support): €612/day in 2022 → €712/day in 2025
  • Skill 2 (IT Systems Engineer / Consultant): €905 → €1,059
  • Skill 3 (Project Management, IT Architecture, Specialized Expertise): €1,317 → €1,475

So, all three levels show steady growth, with Skill 2 being the fastest-rising segment.

The striking part? By 2025, top-tier freelance IT consultants (Skill 3) are pulling in nearly €1,500/day—that’s Western Europe’s top end.

In the UK, YunoJuno’s 2025 report (based on 62,000+ contracts) shows strategy & similar consulting disciplines averaging £520/day, with the top 10% around £708/day—clearly below Switzerland’s rates.

Germany? Local sources show freelance IT rates around €100/hr, which translates to roughly €800/day (assuming 8-hour days). Switzerland still beats that by a lot.

What about the US? ZipRecruiter reports hourly rates from $14.90 up to $132.21. So even if you’re just starting, you can hit three-figure numbers depending on experience and niche.

Here are 4 countries with lower rates:

  1. India: $5–$15/hr
  2. Pakistan: $4–$12/hr
  3. Bangladesh: $3–$10/hr
  4. Philippines: $5–$15/hr

But what makes you think you can’t earn more even in lower-paying countries?

If you’re a freelancer, you know what it means to be location-independent. 🌐

Now, I’ll show you how to score high rates even if your local market pays low. 👇🏻
